The Essence of Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree National Park, CA
Joshua Tree as Itself!
I jokingly call Joshua Tree the “Chill” National Park. On this trip, we had a plan, but only a small portion of it was executed. It was after 2pm on the first day before we stopped at an official “attraction” listed on the map. I love to explore a wash or work my way up the rocks to see if a potential view will turn out to be amazing. (And yes, we enjoyed several!) A trip where the focus is on exploring and learning more about a park is the best! I put no expectations on myself. It is much easier to be present, “living in the Now”. I love how in tune with my senses it makes me.
There are places on Earth that are stunning, but hard to photograph. I feel like Joshua Tree National Park is one of those locations. That means planning for potential weather is important. In this case, we just got lucky. While my plans were limited, subconsciously, I was on the lookout for a Joshua Tree that could somehow be featured.
We had finished a longer than expected meandering hike with no destination. While driving, a group of healthy trees, distinctive rocks and stunning clouds came into view. I pulled the car over and enjoyed a snack taking it in. A little further on, this spot presented itself. It was time to explore! This monster tree drew me in, but once here, everything stopped. To me, this is the park in a nice balanced representation. It took me 4 trips to the park over 25 years to finally stumble across it! Trees, rocks and clouds, they’re like the sugar, salt and fat of cooking…. Good things happen!
