The Racetrack Valley is a special place in Death Valley. This image was taken in January, and while many people think the desert is hot, not always. It was really cold the night before making it difficult to want to get up and take a chance on sunrise. By the time the sun hit us for this image my fingers were almost completely numb from making adjustments on the camera. Since it was still below freezing, I felt a little guilty asking my runner to go down to shorts. If you look closely, you may notice the gloves stayed on. Of all the stuff we got that morning, this is my favorite! The first question people often have is, “How many shots did it take to put this together with the perfect spacing?” The short answer is a lot. Each time he ran through was roughly 25 shots. The runner can help give a little perspective into how vast of an area this is. We were the only ones in the valley that morning. For miles in each direction, not a car or person. To have this special place all to ourselves was something I will never forget!
