One Night on North Dome, a Yosemite Adventure with Family

North Dome, Yosemite National Park

On the Road Again:

There’s something magical about Yosemite National Park that draws me back time and again. This time, it wasn’t just the towering granite cliffs or the whispering pines that made the trip special—it was the company of my cousin and her husband, visiting from New York, who shared this experience with me. Our one-night backpacking adventure to North Dome was the perfect blend of catching up, making new memories, and soaking in the incredible views that only Yosemite can offer.

The Journey Begins

We started our adventure early in the morning, the anticipation palpable as we loaded our packs and hit the trail. The hike to North Dome is one of those quintessential Yosemite trails that offers a bit of everything: shaded forests, sweeping vistas, and, of course, the final reward of standing atop North Dome itself with a view that takes your breath away. As we trekked, we found our rhythm, the familiar cadence of hiking boots on dirt mingling with laughter and stories.

For me, this hike was more than just a physical journey; it was a marker of progress in my ongoing efforts to improve my health. The climb was challenging at times, but my excitement to be back in the park, and outdoors for 48 hours created a true feeling of serenity.

Catching Up in the Wilderness

There’s something about being out in nature that makes conversations flow effortlessly. As we made our way up the trail, we talked about everything—family updates, recent travels, and the quirks of daily life. It had been a while since we’d all been together, and the miles seemed to melt away as we reconnected.

The beauty of Yosemite surrounded us, but the conversations we shared were just as enriching. We paused often, not just to catch our breath, but to savor these moments together. The towering pines, the occasional glimpse of Half Dome in the distance, and the sheer vastness of the wilderness provided the perfect backdrop for our talks.

Inside Details of the Somewhat Daunting Task of Organizing the Trip:

Planning a backpacking trip to North Dome in Yosemite National Park is an adventure that promises incredible views and a memorable experience. However, before you hit the trail, it’s essential to secure a wilderness permit, especially if you’re starting from the White Wolf Trailhead.

The easiest way to obtain a wilderness permit is through the National Park Service’s Yosemite Wilderness Permit Reservation System. I was able to login 7 days prior at 7am, and secure the 1 night permit for 3 people. Then the wilderness permit must be picked up in person the day before or the day of your trip. You can do this at any wilderness center in Yosemite, such as the Big Oak Flat Information Station, Yosemite Valley Wilderness Center, or Tuolumne Meadows Wilderness Center. Be sure to bring a photo ID and your confirmation email.

Securing a wilderness permit and reaching the White Wolf Trailhead are the first steps to an unforgettable adventure to North Dome. At White Wolf, there is a small parking area where you can leave your vehicle during your backpacking trip. It’s advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as parking can be limited. With a little preparation, you’ll be all set to experience the stunning beauty of Yosemite’s backcountry. Enjoy your journey!
